Ean teaches us a phrase he uses a lot in the classes he teaches as he helps students understand why security is so difficult in large businesses. The phrase is “businesses are in the business of taking risks”. Every entrepreneur and leadership team that start a company take unimaginable risks so later when you say “We must do this thing or we might be breached” you are speaking to someone who might have made decisions of how to cover payroll by floating the electric bill for the office. They are risk takers that look at probability. You need to start thinking and explaining in business terms to have successful outcomes. “Every successful security professional I know has learned how to translate their security needs into needs that align with business goals.” Once you can learn to do that, you start getting what you need.
